This is CK, a tribal house producer from Port of Spain. The only person to really compare him to his Razorshop, my all time production idol. CK takes a big room, Ibiza/Miami vibe and slows soca down to fit tribal basslines and percussion. He's got a Major Lazer remix on his Soundcloud along the same lines.

Zombies, the menace of the last few years, are the focus of Blaxx 2k10 anthem, is given a similar treatment as "Soca Aliens" a few posts back. It's got a Thriller vibe fo sure, and almost takes me back to big room club nites in NYC when I was barely old enough to get in. Future/retro - something about the word "tribal" that just kinda puts you in a post-criticism position where you just have to swallow the electro vibes and start jumpin around.

Not actually about the anti-soca bias so many amazing dj's seem to have, this is a little overview of homophobia in soca, which is at worst biblical and at best tongue-in-cheek. There's a book coming out about queer Trinidad by a friend of mine so I'm not going to make broad cultural claims, but I have lived there, studied at UWI, and did go to some amazing gay parties.

When I was there, Denise Belfon actually played some gay fetes (quietly of course) and some dude I knew was fucking a famous male vocalist (NO NAMES). Take a second and live for the queen of dancehall soca, whose colaboration with MAW is kinda of a gay anthem.

Soca is pretty laid back about the whole gay thing. Machel has said "mama man" like a handful of times in his music, not that serious. Peter Ram has a few lines about at about 3:30 (along with a hilarious/sexy Adam and Eve scene) that are a bit preachy but not that bad considering

This one is priceless. Psychedelic lyrics, the overriding bestiality metaphors, the lack of violent content - socaphobiaz/ripe for recontextualization

Machines Don't Care is out - I dunno how I feel about it exactly. It's so fidget - excellent production values, questionable dance potential outside hardcore communities. I bought some of it cause you gotta support progressive dance music, but the reason I'm interested at all is the rebirth/renewal of ragga house.

Ragga house is at best a loose description of house music with reggae vocals over it. It can go anywhere from really gay big room shit to stuff that is indistinguishable from midtempo soca. Daddy Freddy really did start off the name and no one has really picked up the standard since.

Machines Don't Care take these tracks in a uk ragga jungle rave direction - house tempo for sure, but it doesn't have that special Caribbean bounce to it. They got some good vocalists and samples, but you can't wine to this stuff. Girls LOVE to wine whether they know they are doin it or not.

Here are a few acts that are doin something more sexy with the sound. While their is nothing profound about the vocals on any of these tracks, and the production may be of varying levels of quality, they make you feel sexy and help you move the waistline.

Greg B, Yves Larock, DJ Chuckie, DJ Assad, Cutee B, and before them MAW, Robbie Rivera, Simon Harris and others know that reggae and calypso-tinged 4/4 music is whats up.
